Position Description

Provide mechanical engineering and systems design support working full time, onsite at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek. Work with client supervisors, project managers and engineers, and other technical and administrative personnel to design or make design changes to combatant craft propulsion, auxiliary and mechanical systems.

Responsibilities

Perform engineering calculations applying marine/mechanical engineering principles, techniques, procedures and criteria specifically for the following combatant craft systems:

  • Main Propulsion Diesel Engines
  • Main and Auxiliary Seawater Systems
  • Exhaust System
  • Propulsion Shafting
  • Generator System
  • HVAC System
  • Firefighting System
  • Potable Water System
  • Sanitation, Sewage and Bilge Systems
  • Hydraulic System
  • Steering System
  • Fuel and Lube Oil System
  • Create product designs, drawings, conduct studies, and generate reports
  • Prepare briefs for senior staff
  • Develop test procedures to ensure component and system performance
  • Perform quality assurance reviews of engineering analyses and other engineering documentation
  • Work independently with moderate supervision at the client site
  • Interface with clients, Gibbs & Cox staff and vendors at all levels
  • Develop and manage technical project cost and schedule

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship and active Secret security clearance or must be eligible to obtain a Secret clearance
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Marine Engineering. Advanced degree is a plus
  • 5 to 10 years of engineering experience in US Navy propulsion and shipboard auxiliary systems
  • Proficiency in using industry-standard mechanical system design and analysis software tools
  • Solid understanding of the US Navy and navy processes and procedures
  • Strong experience and knowledge of small, fast combatant craft ranging from 7M rigid inflatable boats to 30M combatant craft is desired
  • Active duty USN experience is desired
  • Knowledge of ABS Naval Vessel Rules a plus
  • Professional Engineering credential in Mechanical or Marine Engineering or applicable discipline a plus
